Active chaotic mixing in a channel with rotating arc-walls

چکیده
An active inline mixer, called Rotating Arc-Wall mixer (RAW), suitable for flows at low Reynolds number and high P\'eclet number, is studied. The forcing protocol, imposed by three rotating circular arc-walls, time periodic. We use simple phenomenological arguments to estimate heuristically the mixing efficiency with two nondimensional control parameters: frequency of strength cross flow relative primary flow. validity limitations proposed conditions are explained transport mechanisms in beneficial role chaotic advection highlighted.

Alternate rotating walls for thermal chaotic mixing
In this study, we numerically investigate the evolution of two-dimensional mixing and heat transfer enhancement within a two-rod stirring device. The fluid is heated by the walls, which are maintained at a constant temperature. We show by analysis of different stirring protocols that the use of discontinuous wall rotations is necessary to promote heat transfer by chaotic mixing. This condition ...

We report on experiments of chaotic mixing in a closed vessel, in which a highly viscous fluid is stirred by a moving rod. We analyze quantitatively how the concentration field of a low-diffusivity dye relaxes towards homogeneity, and we observe a slow algebraic decay of the inhomogeneity, at odds with the exponential decay predicted by most previous studies. Visual observations reveal the domi...
متن کاملThermal Chaotic Mixing of Power-Law Fluids in a Mixer with Alternately-Rotating Walls
We investigate the enhancement of both mixing and heat transfer in a two-rod mixer for highly-viscous non-Newtonian fluids. The mixer is composed of two vertical, circular rods in a cylindrical tank. Chaotic flows are obtained by imposing the temporal modulations of the rotational velocities of the walls. We study the effects of different stirring protocols, which lead to non-chaotic and chaoti...
متن کاملNumerical Investigation of Fluid Mixing in a Micro-Channel Mixer with Two Rotating Stirrers by Using the Incompressible SPH Method
Fluid mixing is a crucial and challenging process for microfluidic systems, which are widely used in biochemical processes. Because of their fast performance, active micromixers that use stirrer blades are considered for biological applications. In the present study, by using a robust and convenient Incompressible Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (ISPH) method, miscible mix...
متن کاملRotation shields chaotic mixing regions from no-slip walls.
We report on the decay of a passive scalar in chaotic mixing protocols where the wall of the vessel is rotated, or a net drift of fluid elements near the wall is induced at each period. As a result the fluid domain is divided into a central isolated chaotic region and a peripheral regular region. Scalar patterns obtained in experiments and simulations converge to a strange eigenmode and follow ...
